This course will cover the basic nomenclature and concepts of structural geology in shortened and extended terrenes, with an emphasis on ideas needed for hydrocarbon exploration and production. The material will include structural geometry and kinematics, subsurface dip analysis (SCAT), fault seals, fractured reservoirs, and relationship between structures and stratigraphic architecture. Exercises will be included to illustrate and reinforce the ideas.

Day 1: Nomenclature and Concepts of Shortened Terrains

Reverse and thrust faults and fault growth
            Dipmeter analysis (SCAT)

Regional Tectonics of West Texas

Day 2: Nomenclature and Concepts of Extended Terrains
            Extensional faults and fault growth
            Extensional folds and fold growth
            Fractured Reservoirs
            Fault Seals
            Summary and Wrap Up
